Rich Metcalf is an award-winning artist. He began using art materials at an early age and continues today entering competitions, exhibiting at shows, and teaching the beauty achieved with oil paints and pastels.
He recieved his formal art instruction from artists at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, The Cape Cod School of Art, and at the Corcoran Museum School of Art in Washington, DC. His paintings are in collections throughout the United States, in Canada, and in France.

Instructor: Rich Metcalf
Pastels .......... Prefer 1⁄2 stick, soft pastels. Warm & cool colors, primary & secondary hues, few earth colors (greens & browns), greys, black & white. Pastel prices have steadily gone up in the past few years. I use Mungyo soft pastels quite a bit. Jerry's Artarama (https://www.jerrysartarama.com) sells Mungyo and they offer a set of 64 half sticks for about $15. (they also have a set of 32 half sticks for about $8.) Check their website, they may be on sale. The $10 materials fee that is charged for each art class at SRAL can be used toward the purchase of your selection of pastels.
(One caution: We do not use OIL PASTELS)
Paper Towels
Plastic Grocery Bag .... (for trash)
1 Soft Brush ..... 1⁄2” or 1” (for blending & softening colors)
Pad of Pastel Papers .. Such as Strathmore 400 series pastel paper pad, 24 sheets, assorted colors, 11” x 14”.
1” Roll of Blue Painter’s Tape
Kneaded Eraser .... (Easily erases pastel, pencil, graphite.)
Tracing Paper ........ (Protects pastel on paper from smudges)
Wet Wipes ............. (To clean up pastel dust on board, desk, hands, etc.)
Large Old Shirt or Apron
Optional: Dust mask, gloves, protective hand cream -- for personal protection.
